Generosity...

Stingy. Selfish. Self-Centered. These were all adjectives used to describe Michael. Rightfully so, he survived the turmoil of environmental neglect and abuse. Out of necessity, Michael and his five siblings had to fend for themselves on many occasions due to the instability of their parents.
Why concern yourself with the welfare of others when your own parents displayed a lack of concern for you and your siblings?

Consequently, Michael’s survival was based solely on how he could take care of himself. He became callous in his interactions with others. “Take” rather than “give” was his motto. His defense mechanisms protected him from further disappointment, but at the same time prevented him from developing healthy interpersonal relationships.

Today, Michael is a shining example of Generosity. At his group home, he volunteers to help out peers and does extra chores. He cares about the well-being of others, and is empathetic to their trials and tribulations. Michael has learned the importance of being unselfish and sharing with peers. He displays great sportsmanship, and would rather be polite, courteous, and play fair than to gloat. Michael is the only sibling to bring hand-made gifts and/or letters for each of his brothers and sisters during visits. He realizes that he has the power to make positive contributions to the lives of others, and expects to be treated as such.

One of the greatest gifts a person can give is the act of generosity. Michael has come a long way, and is a living example of this area of the Circle of Courage. After all, Generosity is the heart of the matter.
